Former Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Locum Consultant Struck Off

A doctor who worked for 11 days at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a locum Consultant in November 2010 has been suspended from practicing in the UK.

During these 11 days a potential fatal blunder by the doctor was only stopped due to the diligence of a cancer nurse. This error came about when the doctor correctly decided to reduce a patient’s chemotherapy but allegedly failed to alter the reduced dose on the prescription. The patient, who was suffering from symptoms associated with toxic effects of chemotherapy could have “succumbed” if the extra dose had been administered. Fortunately a nurse realised the prescription had not been altered  which prevented the blunder from occurring.  Elsewhere between 2008 – 2010 the doctor is accused of other blunders in his treatment of five other cancer patients.

Having been found guilty of serious misconduct at a hearing in Manchester he has now been struck off. The Tribunal ruled his “carelessness” had dramatically reduced his patient’s chances of survival and the General Medical Council (GMC) says his treatment fell “seriously below the standard of that expected of a competent locum”.

All doctors in the UK owe their patients a duty of care. Where this duty has been breached you may have the right to make a complaint and seek redress.

What to do if you think a doctor has put you or a patient in danger.

If you believe that a doctor has failed on their duty of care and subsequently put you or someone else in danger you  can choose to make a complaint with the GMC. The purpose of the Council is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine. The GMC will consider your complaint and assess whether there are concerns about the doctor’s fitness to practice. Where they believe there are concerns, they will launch an investigation.

Additionally where you have received poor medical care, as well as making a formal complaint  you may also have a right to pursue compensation. At Linder Myers we have one of the largest and most experienced teams of specialist clinical and medical negligence lawyers in England and Wales.
